My Art Journey

DeVante Capers is a multidisciplinary artist and visual storyteller from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. A 2022 graduate of Prince George's Community College with a focus in Visual Arts, Capers works across painting, photography, mixed media, writing, and dance to explore what it means to move through the world as an outsider — seeing things in black, white, and the grey in between.

Diagnosed with high-functioning autism, Capers draws from his lived experience to create work that examines mental health, perception, belonging, and self-acceptance. His art is rooted in his own story and perspective, translating emotion, memory, and identity into layered visual narratives that invite others — especially those who feel unseen or misunderstood — to reflect on how difference reshapes the way we understand ourselves and each other.

Capers is the founder of the DeVante Capers Gallery and has exhibited widely across the DMV, including solo exhibitions at Creative Suitland, Artbae and Station 3510, as well as juried shows, group exhibitions, and public art markets throughout the region. His work has been featured in Voyage Baltimore, Bold Journey, and Canvas Rebel, and he has been recognized with honors including a Culture Shock DC Community Award, a PGCC Art Show Honorable Mention, letter of recommendation from Barack Obama and an Official Selection for the 40 North Dance Festival.
